Memories
Kathleen Genera

Maggie... I forgot to add one of my favorite memories. When I worked at St. Patrick's Nursing Home,  you and Maureen came to work with me on weekends and on your days off from school. You both were always so good to the residents there.

I remember that you especially loved the parties and special events that we had and you went around talking to everyone. You really made a lot of people happy. You also helped me create the newsletter for the home. I still have the first edition of that newsletter. Thank you for volunteering to help me and for being so nice to the residents.

Love always, Kathleen

27 years ago, I was, at this time, waiting excitedly for the birth of my first sister Maggie. I was 13 then. I had been asking for a sister for so long and eventually I would be blessed with three beautiful sisters.  I have been flooded with so many memories since you left us.

After you were born, I showed your picture to all my friends and schoolmates. I was so proud to have a little sister. When spring and summer arrived, I would push you up and down City Island Avenue and show you off to everyone. When you could talk, I would bring you with me to hang out with my friends. You picked up a couple of bawdy words and you would have everyone cracking up. The only drawback was you would tell Mom everything I did and said when I was out. After that, I tried to bribe you with toys or candy before we went home to keep quiet, but you would just take the bribe and rat me out anyway (LOL)... I remember when you were about three you liked the song "Gloria" by Laura Branagin and you would sing and dance to it all the time...

I remember your first day of school... and all your school plays...bringing you and Maureen to girlscouts... your basketball games when you and Moe played for a short time...Picking up your report cards, they were always perfect...I remember you both in the Rock Horror Picture show. During the rehearsels and the night of the play you were always fluttering around like the hostess of a party socializing with everyone. You loved being around people... I remember bringing you to dances on the weekend when you were in High School. I would drop you guys off and you would go off excitedly to be the first one in, and when I picked you up, I would have to wait patiently (usually LOL) while you talked to everyone outside before they left, you were always the last one to go. Then you would hop in the car and say Home Jeeves! and I would get ticked off. You enjoyed busting my chops sometimes. I have to admit it was funny... I remember our trips to Florida and especially the day you and Maureen and I went to Cocoa Beach. That was so much fun... I remember our trip to Greenwich Village that was fun too... I remember you wanted to learn needlework and I taught you guys plastic canvas needlework. You were about 11 or 12 and you made a little yellow basket. I still have that and I hung it on my tree this year with MM's in it. You liked crochet and needlework like me and it made me so happy that you liked the harley davidson cross-stitch and afghan kit last Christmas. You started one that day and you reminded me of myself because I would have done the same thing... Even when I was far away I always cherished all of my sisters and I would check out your aol, myspace, etc to check up on you...

I am heartbroken and I miss you so much and it is so hard to write this through my tears. I am comforted by the fact that you are with our beloved Grandmother and she will take care of you from here on. I cherish all of the time I had with you and always will. I Love you so much.

Love always, your big sister Kathleen

Maggie was my older sister. I loved her dearly and always will. Some of my favorite memories of her include visiting her at her dorm in Purchase, going for rides and getting lost, and hanging out at the beach. One memory I cherish is when I was visiting my parents on City Island with my son, who was 2 at the time. I went out for a walk and I come back and his face is covered in ice cream! I look at Maggie and she says to me "What? The kid wanted ice cream." The smile on his face was priceless. Also, when my son started talking, she would get into arguments with him. He refused to call her "aunt." After a while of those two arguing back and forth, she got him to say it.
